About Larry

Lawrence Lowery is a professor emeritus at the University of California at Berkeley. He is affiliated with the Graduate School of Education for his research and with the Lawrence Hall of Science for his curriculum products.

At the LHS he was the Principal Investigator for both the EQUALS math program and FAMILY MATH. In addition, he was the Principle Investigator for the Full Option Science System (FOSS), a science curriculum for grades K-8 developed at the Lawrence Hall of Science.

He remains active, making presentations around the world on math and science education. His topics include research on brain research, effective teaching, inquiry processes, animal coloration, and Cartesian coordinate graphing.

Program includes 27 instructional modules arranged in a developmental sequence to provide a complete science curriculum for pre-school through grade 8. Modules utilize kits of specially designed materials rather than texts. System includes sets of authentic assessment devices of three types (hands-on, pictorial, and narrative). System is supplemented by teacher prep videotapes designed to familiarize teachers with FOSS.

Beyond

Professor Lowery writes children's books and collects a type of Americana children's book called the Big Little Book. The books, primarily published from 1932 through 1950, were produced by the Whitman Publishing Company in Racine, Wisconsin. When its archives were dismantled in the early 1970s, the history and details about the books was lost. Lowery reconstructed the history by writing The Collector's Guide to Big Little BooksThe Collector's Guide to Big Little Books and Similar Books (1982), The Golden Age of Big Little Boopks 1932-1938, and established a Big Little Book Club that continues to research and publish bimonthly information related to the books. At its peak, tthe Club had over 1000 active members.
