Beginning in 1936, Whitman, in an
agreement with the Dell Publishing Company of New York City, published a
series of books similar to its BLBs. Utilizing some of its authors,
artists, and authorized comic strip characters, the first 4 titles appeared
in both hard cover and soft cover versions. The hard covers were called
Cartoon Story¨ Books
and were all given the same publisherÕs number Ñ #6833. The soft covers
were unnumbered and called Fast-Action Story¨ Books.

The books are as tall as but narrower
than the Whitman Movie Scene books, thus they carry the illusion of being
very tall books. Like their BLB counterparts, each book contains black and
white illustrations opposite each page of text. The pages are glued to the
spine, and the four-color covers are varnished on the hard cover versions
for durability. The back covers list other titles or has advertising. The
soft covers were released in sets of 6 titles for each set. The hard covers
sold for 15¢ but do not have the price on their covers. The soft covers
have a 10¢ price on their front covers. The hard cover editions are
slightly more valuable than the soft cover editions. |
