	During the 1930s, Whitman published a vast array of books and other publications. Whitman produced many premiums for stores, radio shows, and gas stations. Most of these have a relationship to Whitman's line of Big Little Books® in that some premiums contained BLB content and pictures, some contained artwork done by BLB artists, and some contained content similar to that of the BLBs. All the premiums followed the BLB format with text on one page with a captioned illustration facing it. The premiums in this section are grouped by type.
	Section 1:		Radio Coupon Premiums: similar in size, format, and style. Cocomalt, Amoco Gas, Kolynos, Phillips, Ralston
	Section 2:		Chain-store Premiums: Each premium is in a pamphlet type format with a small number of pages. Their content is taken directly from the BLBs. Karmetz and Perkins

	Section 7		Silver Age Radio Premiums: In 1939, a few premiums were produced as radio giveaways.
	THE RADIO PREMIUMS: COCOMALT, TOOTHPASTE, AMOCO GAS, AND RALSTON
	Whitman's earliest peripherals were published from mid-1934 to mid-1935. They were produced to be given away as promotional material for sponsors of radio shows. Although they are generally known by collectors as "Cocomalt Premiums" because most of these books have Cocomalt ads on them, several other sponsors have their ads printed on the back covers and inside covers of the books. The books range in size from 192 pages to 320 pages. They have soft covers and glued spines. Their outside dimensions are 3 1/2" x 4 1/4" x 3/4". They look very much like a small version of the BLBs. Their content is often condensed versions of BLBs of the same title. Only a few contain fresh material. There are 19 different titles and 7 variations (3 different versions of Mickey Mouse the Mail Pilot) known at the time of this writing. It is possible that other titles exist.

	CHAIN-STORE PREMIUMS: KARMETZ AND PERKINS
	In 1934 Whitman began producing small premium booklets for retail distribution. These appear in two versions. The first is a set of eight titles for Karmetz, a distributing agency. The second is a set of eight for Perkins, a similar agency. These distributors sold the premiums to various businesses for use as promotional giveaways, much like the little comics produced for Red Goose Shoes and Poll Parrot Shoes.
	The original printing contained no advertising. Booklets without advertising are rarely found. All the booklets are 48 pages in length, their covers are of heavy paper imprinted with a four-color illustration, and the pages are held together by two heavy staples fastened through the covers at one side.
	According to Whitman's records, Karmetz and Perkins distributed the books and imprinted them with advertising for various businesses. Collectors have found some titles imprinted with ads for Sears, shoe stores, grocery stores, the Lily-Tulip Corporation (the business that sold Tarzan Ice Cream), and Lemix-Korlix (the Kool-aid Company). The extent to which these books were imprinted with advertisements - which titles and which companies - may never be known. Books without ads on the back covers are rare
	The business that is most remembered for giving away these books is the Kool-aid Company. This company added numbers to the Perkins titles (e.g., Tailspin Tommy is #6, Men of the Mounted is #7, and Ella Cinders is #8). Occasionally both sets have been identified as the Kool-aid Big Little Books® or the Lemix-Korlix Big Little Books®.

	MACY'S PREMIUMS
	For two consecutive years Whitman printed Mickey Mouse premiums specially for Macy's Department Stores. The premiums, distributed by the Macy's Santa to "good" little boys and girls at Christmas time, were 144 pages in length. Mickey Mouse and Minnie at Macy's was published in 1934, and Mickey Mouse and Minnie March to Macy's was published in 1935. The first premium tells about the pilgrims. The second tells of Mickey and Minnie's visit to New York and how Macy's developed balloons of them to lead its seasonal parade. These are two very popular premiums for both Disney and BLB collectors. They are rare and seldom found in good condition.

	The Pan Am Gas premiums are 64 pages in length and 3 1/2" x 3 1/2" x 3/8" in size. They have heavy paper covers with 4-color illustrations on them. Some draw their content directly from BLB material, others use authorized character material not used in the BLBs. All follow the BLB format with an illustration opposite each page of text. At the time of this writing, 15 Pan Am titles have been identified. Since publications are usually done in even numbers, it is likely that at least one more Pan Am title is yet to be discovered.

	ICE CREAM PREMIUMS
	In the mid-1930s, the Lily-Tulip Corporation contracted with Whitman to publish small premium books containing stories using characters from the popular BLBs. The purpose for the books was to promote Tarzan Ice Cream.
	Each premium book could be acquired by saving and trading in 12 Tarzan Ice Cream cup lids. A coupon was printed on the back cover of each book, and if 12 coupons were collected, they could be turned in for a "Grand Prize." Among the choices of prizes were such items as a Tarzan and the Lion Man hard cover book or a four-blade scout knife with Tarzan's picture on both sides of the pearl handle. Because of the emphasis upon the product, these small books are often referred to as the "Tarzan Cup Lid Premiums." The books are nearly square, 3 3/4" x 3 5/8".

	Buddy Books are easily identified by the coupon printed on the last page rather than on the back cover. The books are identical in size, each with 128 pages, and each numbered — similar to the 1934-1936 sets. The books, published in 1938, were obtained by purchasing ice cream cones and saving the "Buddy Book Coupons" given with each purchase. Twelve coupons could be turned in for one premium book.

	PENNY BOOKS
	The Whitman Publishing Company copyrighted the term “Penny Book” and used it to describe several types of small soft cover books. All of Whitman’s Penny Books were published during the Silver Age of Big Little Books (mid-1938 into the 1940s). Some took their content directly from the Big Little Books, but most had original content. There were three distinct series of Whitman Penny Books.
	NOTE: A lower case alphabetical letter designating printing and or variation should be added as a suffix to the Lowery number; a-first printing; b-second printing; c-third printing; etc. 1-variation 1; 2-variation 2; 3-variation 3; etc.
	The first series of "Penny Books" was made up of three numbered sets;

		1100B Fun Book Series
		1101 Cowboy and Detective Story Books Series
	The second series of "Penny Books" was for younger children. They contain traditional stories such a The Gingerbread Boy and Peter Rabbit.
		1104 Fairy Tale and Story Books Series
	The third series of "Penny Books" contains content from the Disney Studios.

	SILVER AGE RADIO PREMIUMS (1939)
	The popular Dick Tracy radio program had two runs on the air. The first began on Mutual on September 30, 1935 and ended on NBC in 1939. The second began on ABC in 1943 and ended in 1948. It was the first run that produced two radio scripts that were given away to listeners of the program: Dick Tracy and the Invisible Man, Dick Tracy and the Ghost Ship. Black and white illustrations and a story are placed in the first 20 pages, then the radio script follows.
